Song chosen: I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good by Duke Ellington
The emotions that this song provokes is easily a sense of calm. It sounds like a song that would play during a quiet evening while a young couple dances on the living room rug. I believe this is achieved musically not only by the loving lyrics, but by the muted instruments. It's mostly very soft with an alto saxophone really defining the melody, however, the saxophone is still tender.
The music and lyrics interact with each other well, the background music tends to not follow her exact notes, and just flows as it's own entity. It still works well with her voice though.
The music surprised me because I didn't expect a woman to be singing, as it says the composition is by Duke Ellington. I am thoroughly surprised by the gorgeous tone of her voice and how easily she can include vibrato. It's not meant to show off her talent, but add to the feeling of the piece.
This piece has a tenor saxophone which is also heavily featured in an excellent song called The Working Hour by Tears For Fears. That song is so complex and beautiful and I think tenor saxophone adds an elegant vibe to any composition.
The thing I noticed most is it sounds like such a romantic song but the first lyrics are "Never treats me sweet and gentle, the way he should" telling me this song is more about a woman in denial about her husband's love for her. She loves him but he doesn't love her. It's a quite sad song really. I think the target audience is probably young women because it's about the nuances of love.
I really loved how you described the song and gave the lovey tones of the song! You described what instruments were used and how they were used in the song. I really like how you described the singer and what she contributed to the song. You described it perfectly and I could tell it was a romantic song that couples could dance to! I really liked your blog post this week! Cute blog too:)
ReplyDeleteI love the way that you talk about the singer's voice and how it contrasts with the actual music in the piece. It really adds a lot to it and I think it's genius! I also love the artistic liberties that she takes in the song to really make it like her own. Good song choice!
